Pineapple Farming is a foreign exchange earner that attract attention of farmers worldwide. It can be processed into vinegar, jam, juice, and many more things. The leaves are a great source of fiber that can be used for clothing. The skin of pineapples can be used as feed for livestock. There are many uses of this fruit, if you grow them you will for sure see heavy profit.
- Pineapple require uniform temperature all year. It needs evenly distributed rain when it is getting matured. This fruit prefer elevation up to 240 meters with a well-drained soil having pH between 4.5 and 5.5.
- Suckers and slips are among suitable choices.Slips can be harvested within 18 to 20 months. Make sure the planting material is of same type and size to get uniform fruits.
- Prepare the soil if you are ready to start pineapple farming. The ideal months are between March and august, if you are using slips then plant them up to 10 cm deep, up to 30 cm in rows, and the distance between rows should be 100cm. This particular spacing can produce up to 50,000 plants per hectare. You can use your own method of rows and columns, just give plants enough space so that they can grow easily.
Weed control and Fertilizer
Make sure there aren’t weeds growing, you can use weed as mulch instead of organic matter. But be careful because there are toxic weeds that can destroyed the soil and the environment around. Pineapple farming require nitrogen fertilizer so that plant can produce large fruits. Potassium can be used for increasing sweetness and the size as well. You may need little amount of phosphorus if soil already has it.
Harvesting Pineapple Farming
There are three processes, harvest, handling, and then picking. When you harvest the fruit, remove pieces of leaves, place boxes near the plant and start picking pineapples. Make sure the boxes don’t have anything sharp because it can effect more than one fruit. Once they are harvested, send them to the market without storing. If you are going to export the harvest, pack pineapples in wood wool or protective material. You will need up to 1 kg wood wool per case.
