Fig farming (Angeer) require tropical and subtropical climate to grow into delicious fruits. They prefer large areas which are hot, they can also be grown in large pots. This fruit can be eaten preserved, fresh, or by cooking. The tree of figs don’t need pollination because all the flowers are female and they grow without male.
You can grow them in containers by adding bark chips. Among the things that this tree needs are full sunlight, fertilizer and moisture. Add high dose of fertilizer every four weeks along with water moderately. Make sure the tree is moist during winter.
If growing outdoors, then spring is the best season because of full sun. As long as soil is well drained, fig tree will grow. Add a lot of organic material and keep the soil well drained.
If you are transplanting then make sure it is 2 to 4 inch deeper as compare to original pot. The plant should be 20 feet away from other trees.
Taking care of Figs
When you are fig farming make sure there is plenty of water available because they need water on regular basis to grow big. They prefer dry climate with deep watering once every week.
Most of fig trees don’t need fertilization, but if it is not growing then you can add mulch, not more than 12 inch during seasons. Add 1 pound nitrogen, divide it up to 4 feedings. You can apply fertilizer at the end of winter to the mid-summer.
Apply layer of mulch to prevent weed from growing, it will keep moisture in the soil and roots will become strong. Fig farming don’t need much pruning process, but during dormant seasons, you need to remove diseased, weak, and dead branches so that more can grow.
Harvesting Fig farming
Fig farming is not difficult, if you plant it successful you will see juicy figs ready to be ripen in seasons. When they are ready they will be colored fully, and little soft. Wear gloves when picking fruits because the sap of this tree may irritate your skin. This fruit is perishable so make sure to store in refrigerator, they can stay there for up to 3 days. If you are looking to store for long terms then use a freezer. Another method to use them for long term is by drying the fruit.
